Relationships on the Kool-Aid:
Legally Blonde

OH Elle! You had such high hopes, didn't you, honey? You had the perfect guy which you had been with forever, you had built your hopes and dreams around him and what does he do? He just doesn't love you any more does he? Blair would totally understand. And then what do you do? You chase after him across the country and try to make yourself into the girl you think he wants, dont you? Yeah. Blair TOTALLY gets you. When you finally become free and liberated and HAPPY what does he do? He wants you back. At least you had the sense to kick him to the curve. :D

Shrek

I know we've compared this one before but the similarities are so uncanny that we can't help ourselves. Here is a girl who has lived with the idea of Prince Charming all of her life, she's a complete idealist, hides a kick-ass side and has self-esteem issues. She plans things to perfection and what happens? The one man she wasn't expecting is the ones who sweeps her off her feet. Meanwhile Charming can't handle the idea of loosing her. I think Nate will show us this in the very near future.

Stardust

Role reversal but comparable nonetheless. Talk about not being loved for who you are and running around like a fool attempting to make a relationship work. Here you have it. Though Tristan is a strong person he falls for the very wrong person who has her sights set on anyone but him but maybe him too. She, like Nate, flounce everywhere. Tristan vows to make sure they work out and goes into another world in an attempt to prove that. Now, like our Ms. Waldorf, attempting to make something fit that is just not meant to be. Never really knowing their real self because of the eagerness to love this person that is not their match.

Pride & Prejudice

One of my favorite comparisons because there's so much likeness here that it's rather hilarious. Mr. Collins is mother's choice for Elizabeth. The only difference here is that Elizabeth knows better but let us count to similarities. Mr. Collins sees Elizabeth as the perfect catch, he thinks they have tons of things in common, he knows absolutely nothing about her, he has no idea of her fiery personality, he's confused half the damn time, and he cannot see how Elizabeth would not want him. I mean - he's a perfect catch. How can anyone NOT want Mr. Collins? How can anyone NOT want Mr. Archibald?

The Princess Bride

This was an odd relationship if we ever saw one, wasn't it? But the moment that they're just like Nair is when she finally gets balls and tells him off. He can't handle it. He can't handle her in his face, he likes her docile and sweet and looking pretty. But the moment she called him a coward for pushing her true love away it's when they are TOTALLY like Nair 3.0 (or should it be 4.0 considering that they kinda broke up??). Nate pushing Chuck away and telling him to stay away from Blair is totally showing that he is a coward because he knows the moment Chuck really tries (Wesley even showing up) he's lost the girl and he'll be left looking the fool.
-------
The Last of the Mohicans

This can possibly be said that it's a relationship that progresses from mutual respect, the loss of respect to back to selfless sacrifice. So I give them more props than I would Nair. Duncan is the perfect gentleman for Cora, daughter of a Colonel. Duncan himself tells her 'we'll be the most perfect couple in London' and to this our smarter Cora says she will think over his marriage proposal. All she does is observe him and in observing his behavior she realizes she doesn't love him IN THAT WAY. Duncan, unable to handle her rejection attempts to sabotage her relationship with Hawkeye. (Nate: "I dont want you to go near her again") Yeah, kinda like that. In the end Duncan goes all noble and sacrifices himself so that Cora and Hawkeye can be together so he earned points from everyone.

Beauty & the Beast

One of my favorite ones. Not because I think Nate is like Gaston but because the basis of it is like Nair. Pretties go together, in this case. Gaston has NO idea who Belle is. He thinks that she, like the rest of the women in town, are fawning all over themselves to be with him. He thinks she would be EXCITED to be with him. Unfortunately for him Belle is not hurt like Blair is and doesn't fall for his 'charms'. What happens when she rejects him? He believes if the competitor is out of the way she will stay with him. I swear, I dont know who misinforms these men.

Clueless

Oh my clueless Cher. Let us jump straight into the similarities. Cher completely transforms who she is just to garner Christian's attentions. She plans everything to PERFECTION. Including the night she will loose her virginity to him and he's totally not into her. She makes sure there's a blob of cookie dough baking and she believes them to be perfect for one another as they're so pretty. SHE has no idea who HE is, doesn't know his music, doesn't know the oldies he likes and most importantly doesn't know he's gay. Cher is also a plotter and Christian is totally not, he has no idea all she's planning which if he wasn't gay would be Nair to the tip. But, we still hold hope that Nate will be gay in the coming season so this may still work.

Far and Away

Probably the most accurate of comparisons. Both Shannon and Steven are nearly engaged though they're technically not. Perfect families, perfect looks, the most admired couple in Ireland. My lady Shannon hides behind the stiffness a wild and strong spirit which Steven has NO clue about. One day, she lets loose and runs off with a man who is very similar in spirit to her though of a much lower class (not romantically running away, more like partners). After living like the woman she was meant to be for a long time she ends up back with Steven but the moment in this film that just seals the Nairy-stripe for me is when Steven goes off and makes a decision without Shannon and she's pissed but she doesn't let it show it. He notices a bit and tells her 'I dont like to see you angry. It's not in your nature'. And she controls her anger towards this but a second later her true love (and this is my favorite part) tells her he knew she would make it because of her spirit, her strength because she was one hell of a woman. A 'cocker'. Awesome moment in the distinction of someone who sees who you are and loves that person they see and Shannon DOES grow up through the film but her spirit and fire ALWAYS stay the same, she only has to subdue it when she's with Steven. When she's with Joseph he compliments her spirit because they're SO alike.

French Kiss

Oh Kate. She has the perfect boyfriend, on her way to the perfect life, his family loves her and they're just perfect. One should note that while Kate is all about Charlie she's just this whiny person that makes you want to throttle her. What happens? He gets distracted when he spots someone with prettier legs and she looses him. So she goes all the way to France to get her man back - to FIX it - and on her way there she falls for the most unlikely man. He's rude, coincided, with very questionable morals, street smart and a master plotter and manipulator. What happens is as she continues being away from Charlie a stronger Kate emerges. When Charlie finally sees her once more he's taken back with the light and airy Kate he encounters, she's following orders from her new partner on how to get her Charlie back. Charlie can't get enough of her and it's only when they're about to go at it that she snaps and realizes that Charlie is never really going to love the REAL her because he wasn't the one who brought out 'the big shinning Kate light'. It was the other guy. So in the end Kate gets her man, the one that wants her - and "JUST her" and they live happily ever after in the French countryside.

Shall we do a Chair-ship comparison? ;)
Oh yes!! Please do! Of course Rhett and Scarlett are top on the list!
ReplyDeleteOh these totally fit with Nair!! For me Fiona and Charming and Elle and Warren come to mind the most. LMAO!

ReplyDeletethis entire thing made me laugh :P
its just all the stupid relationships put together, LOL.
and Nbers try to be so cocky? please. wash that ass before walking out of the bathroom please!
Thank you for this, it was a great list and very enjoyable to read!
ReplyDeleteI was halfway through it when I thought "Cher and Christian from Clueless could totally be here if he wasn't gay" and then I scrolled down and BOOM! There they are :D God, I really want to see Natalie going gay - the only thing holding me back is the inevitable hook-up with Eric. I love my Eric too much for that, I don't want to sentence him to a life with The Manwhore.
The PP part made me laugh, I don't actually think Mr Collins fits that much (Wickham and Mr Collins crossed however, now that's Natalie), but since Chair is a lot like Darcy/Elizabeth I approve of it. And it was so funny, I kept picturing the proposal from 1995 PP with Chace's confused face which is one of the most hilarious scene EVER imo.
Curious though, I don't know all these movies, were there any endgame couples among these?
And yes, please, Chair-ship comparison!
no, none of these are endgame ;)
ReplyDeleteThe reason I stay away from Wickham is because Wickham was purposely playing the girls, and I honestly dont believe Nate to be smart enough to do that. But Lizzi AROUND Wickham is very Blair-like.
Chair-Ship comparison! hell-freaking yeah!
ReplyDeletePleeease do a Chair-Ship comparison (:
ReplyDelete<3333
Fantastic list! Yes, please do Chuck/Blair!
ReplyDeleteAwesome comparisons! "clap"
ReplyDeleteFrench Kiss is one of my favorite movies.
KC and NB very similar! "nod"
Yes, please do Chuck/Blair!! Please!
YES! Please do a list of Chair-like ships!
ReplyDeletePleeeaseeee!!
ReplyDeleteI NEED a Chair-like relationships!!!!!!
YES to the Chair comparisons. I know you probably don't watch Robin Hood BBC as that almost certainly doesn't air in the US, but Maid Marian was clearly always destined to be with Guy of Gisbon, not Robin (who is a weedy fool). Guy is so like Chuck and Marian like Blair. It's amazing.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I loved this post, all the best films were in it. :)
Oh wow, j'adore. These all fit and epic films too.
ReplyDeleteIncidentally, have you heard the song "It's Not Fair" by Lily Allen? It IS Nair, I swear it. Listen to the lyrics. They look like the perfect couple but are totally lacking in sexual chemistry. Some of the lyrics are quite dodgy; it's actually a song about premature ejaculation, but essentially it's their relationship. I need someone to make a video of it.
So I know I'm like a month later for this coment, but, have you ever seen "Ladies night" it's a Mexican movie. Nair are totally like one the couple there, the girl in that movie even fakes her virginity to her boyfriend... nair much?
ReplyDeleteShall we do a Chair-ship comparison? ;)
I don't think you need to ask...
